New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Students in Pennsylvania College of Technology's heating, ventilation and air conditioning design technology major participated in a meeting of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers in Harrisburg. Seniors Justin E. Gombert and Matthew P. Robinson presented their senior projects; Matthew A. Alters received a $500 scholarship. (more)

Shelby McMahon, an engineering student at Penn State Fayette, has been selected as a consultant to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Inc.'s Student Activities Committee. ASHRAE is an international organization, and the Student Activities Committee runs several programs for kindergarten to 12th grade and college-age students. At ASHRAE's annual meeting, June 21-25 in Salt Lake City, McMahon will be representing about 5,000 student members of the more than 250 student branches of ASHRAE around the world. The committee investigates ways ASHRAE can best meet the challenge of encouraging students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. (more)
