A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

THON accepting applications for annual 5K, scheduled for Oct. 23

The THON 5K, to be held Sunday morning, Oct. 23, benefits the Four Diamonds Fund, which helps pediatric cancer patients and families and also funds pediatric cancer research. THON's slogan is 'For the Kids,' often shortened to FTK.

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon's 11th annual 5K race -- the largest 5K in central Pennsylvania -- is accepting applications for its race and "fun run" to be held Sunday, Oct. 23, on Penn State's University Park campus. All proceeds from the race will go toward the 2012 Dance Marathon fundraising total, which will be donated to the Four Diamonds Fund and the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. (more)

More than 4,000 THON supporters participated in the 2010 THON 5K on Sunday, Oct. 17. The race's 5 kilometers, which translate to just over 3 miles, started and finished at the Bryce Jordan Center on Curtin Road and stretched through the University Park campus on Curtin, Porter, Hastings, Bigler, Pollock and Fraser roads. The event is one of the larger fundraising activities to benefit the Penn State Dance Marathon during the fall semester. Penn State Live photographer Andy Colwell ran the race with roughly 50 of his fellow Blue Band members, led by Blue Band Director Richard Bundy, and he took pictures along the way. 5k run/walk at University Park campus to benefit Haitian orphanage

On Feb. 6, runners and walkers can take part in a 5-kilometer event to benefit a Haitian orphanage destroyed by last month's massive earthquake. The event will begin at 11 a.m. at the Intramural Building on Penn State's University Park campus. Thousands of Dance Marathon supporters walked and ran throughout campus on Sunday, Nov. 1, as they participated in the ninth annual THON 5K. The event, open to anyone interested in helping raise money for childhood cancer research, began and ended at the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road, and drew thousands of Penn Staters, THON family members and community members. The Annual Steps to Safety 5K Walk/Run benefiting the Centre County Women's Resource Center (CCWRC) will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the intersection of North Atherton Street and White Course Drive along the Penn State golf course. The event is in partnership with Penn State Federal Credit Union; all proceeds stay local with CCWRC. Lion Ambassadors to host 12th annual 5k Moxie-thon on Oct. 4

The Penn State Lion Ambassadors will host the 12th annual 5K Moxie-thon, a race against leukemia, beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, on Penn State's University Park campus. The starting line is in front of the Intramural Building. Moxie-thon is a 5K run/walk in memory of Melissa Heydenreich, a past Lion Ambassador who lost her life to leukemia in 1997. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome to participate in this event. Participants can pre-register for Moxie-thon at http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/lionambassadors/events/moxiethon.htm online.
