Children of deployed U.S. military members face a number of stressful issues, and teachers in Pennsylvania's schools often need to lend special support to those children and their families. A team composed primarily of Penn State faculty and staff members has won a national award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a project that began as an effort to locate and document the body of research undergirding the 4-H youth development program. Led by Jan Scholl, associate professor of agricultural and extension education in the College of Agricultural Sciences, the team received the Partnership Award for Effective and Efficient Use of Resources from USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Tractor Supply Company (TSC) stores in Pennsylvania are joining with Penn State Extension's 4-H youth-development program to support local youth with the 4-H TSC Paper Clover Campaign. The national in-store fundraising effort will benefit state and local 4-H programming in each of the communities where a Tractor Supply Company store is located. (more)

Youth in Centre County took part in water quality experiments Wednesday (Oct. 6) at the Food Science Building on Penn State's University Park campus and simultaneously joined hundreds of thousands across the nation in the effort. As part of 4-H National Youth Science Day, youth participated in 4-H2O, the 2010 National Science Experiment. This year's experiment teaches youth the importance of water quality and conservation and helps them determine their own carbon footprints.In Pennsylvania, 4-H is part of Penn State Cooperative Extension. A community garden in the Allison Hill neighborhood of Harrisburg, Pa., is set to become part of Carver's Secret Garden. Carver's Secret Garden is a 4-H educational outreach program of Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. The program was initiated by Dauphin County cooperative extension to address the specific needs of urban and inner-city youth. Boalsburg, Pa., resident Fred Strouse credits 4-H with making him a successful farmer, auctioneer and entrepreneur. "My 4-H experience taught me so much about responsibility, planning and leadership that it really influenced me throughout my life," said Strouse. "It gave me knowledge and self confidence that have helped me become successful." In recognition of that early guidance, Strouse has established a $50,000 endowment for Centre County 4-H. Funded by an immediate gift of $10,000 and a $40,000 gift annuity, he hopes his support can make a difference in a child's life. (more)
