A trio of Penn State Football student-athletes have been selected the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society for the 2009 season. Nittany Lion punter Jeremy Boone (Mechanicsburg), linebacker Josh Hull (Millheim) and kick snapper Andrew Pitz (Bettendorf, Iowa) were selected for the honor. The past two years, Penn State has led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. During the 2009 season, three Nittany Lions repeated their Academic All-America accolades: Hull, Pitz and junior Stefen Wisniewski (Bridgeville). Hull and Pitz become the seventh and eighth Nittany Lions to earn first team Academic All-America honors twice. (more)
Penn State has earned an unprecedented 28th Lambert Meadowlands Trophy presented by the ECAC, symbolic of Eastern football supremacy. The Nittany Lions also have been selected ECAC Team of the Year for a record 13th time. In addition to the team accolades, senior quarterback Daryll Clark (Youngstown, Ohio) has been selected ECAC Player of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision, leading a group of five Nittany Lions that were named ECAC All-Stars among FBS institutions. A trio of Penn State standouts have accepted invitations to play in the Fourth Annual Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 6. Linebacker Josh Hull (Millheim), tackle Dennis Landolt (Burlington, N.J.) and cornerback/kick returner A.J. Wallace (Waldorf, Md.), will play for The Nation squad, led by Howard Schnellenberger, head coach at Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. ET at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game will be televised by CBS College Sports (Ch. 274 on Comcast in Centre Region). (more)

During the 2009 season, Penn State was one of only three teams in the nation that finished in the top 15 of the six primary defensive statistical categories to continue the unit's tremendous success since the 2004 campaign. From 2004-09, Penn State is one of only two defensive units that rank among the top five in the nation in rushing defense (2nd, 96.99 ypg), scoring defense (15.1 ppg) and total defense (4th, 290.3 ypg). The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has recognized the Penn State Football program for the Nittany Lions' Graduation Success Rate for the 19th time in the AFCA's annual Academic Achievement Award survey. The honorable mention citation marks the 19th time the Nittany Lions have been recognized by the AFCA in the 23 years they have been eligible. Penn State was among 11 institutions that earned special recognition from the AFCA for graduation success. Northwestern was the only other Big Ten school among the 11. (more)
A trio of Penn State record holders have accepted invitations to play in the 85th East-West Shrine Game, as quarterback Daryll Clark (Youngstown, Ohio) has joined Jeremy Boone (Mechanicsburg) and Andrew Quarless (Uniondale, N.Y.) for this week's contest. The contest will be played Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla., the site of Penn State's 19-17 win over LSU in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day. The East-West Shrine Game will begin at 3 p.m. ET and be televised by ESPN2. (more)
Penn State standouts Sean Lee (Pittsburgh) and Jared Odrick (Lebanon, Pa.) have accepted invitations to play in the 61st Annual Under Armour Senior Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 30. Lee and Odrick are playing for the North squad, which will be coached by Jim Schwartz and the staff of the Detroit Lions. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The Big Ten Conference posted four impressive bowl victories during the 2009-10 post-season and the Big Ten Network will breakdown the games during its Big Ten Football Bowl Wrap-Up at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 14. The Big Ten Football Bowl Wrap-Up will re-air three times during the upcoming week: Jan. 15 (5 p.m.), Jan. 16 (10:30 p.m.) and Jan. 19 (9 a.m.). Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith will host the 60-minute program. They will be joined by Rick Pizzo and analysts Anthony Herron, Chris Martin and Glen Mason. Interviews with Big Ten coaches and players will be included in the program. (more)
Penn State's dramatic victory over LSU in the 2010 Capital One Bowl earned a six percent television ratings increase over the 2009 contest and was seen in more than 7.8 million U.S. TV households. The Nittany Lions' 19-17 win over the Tigers earned a 6.8 rating for the ABC national telecast on New Year's Day, tied with the FedEx Orange Bowl for the fifth-highest rated bowl among the 34 post-season contests this past season.
