Traditional American Indian Powwow to be held April 3 and 4

University Park, Pa. -- The "New Faces of an Ancient People," a traditional American Indian Powwow, will be held at the Mount Nittany Middle School, State College, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, April 3 and 4, sponsored jointly by Penn State and the State College Area School District. The public is welcome to attend any of the free events.

The celebration includes American Indian drums and dancers from American Indian communities in the Dakotas, New Mexico, New York, Canada, Kentucky and the Ohio Valley, among other places. Also available will be original beadwork, silver works and arts/crafts, and contemporary indigenous foods for sale.

Invited American Indian drums and dancers are nationally renowned for their performances including Bill Crouse, a hoop dancer from Seneca reservation, and Delwin Fiddler, from Cheyenne River, S.D.

Several State College area teachers will incorporate the events into their curriculum's unit activities.

Admission and parking at the middle school are free. A free shuttle will run continuously between the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus and the powwow.

This event is made possible by the support of many Penn State offices, such as the American Indian Tribal Alliance student organization, the Office of Vice Provost for Educational Equity, the Alumni Association, College of Education, Institute for the Arts and Humanities, and the University Park Allocations Committee; the Learning Enrichment and Gifted Student Programs, State College Area School District and several area businesses.
