University Park, Pa. -- Dawn Upshaw has developed a voice of worldwide celebrity thanks to work in operas, recitals, popular music and recordings. The celebrated soprano comes to Penn State's Schwab Auditorium for an evening of song at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, on the University Park campus.
Her program is scheduled to include works by Stephen Foster, Claude Debussy, Kurt Weill, Luciano Berio and music from a collection of folk tunes -- inspired by South American, Middle Eastern and Roma (Gypsy) sources -- written for the soprano by Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov.
Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $29 for a general audience member; $17 for a full-time Penn State University Park Student; and $23 for a person 18 and younger. For tickets or information, phone (814) 863-0255 or 1-800-ARTS-TIX. Tickets are also available at the three Arts Ticket Center locations: Eisenhower Auditorium, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays: HUB-Robeson Center Information Desk, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays; and Penn State Tickets Downtown (in the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center, 146. S. Allen St., State College), 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Upshaw is revered for her beautiful voice and flawless technique as well as her talent for interpretation. "She has a communicative gift to create each new thought as if it were just coming to life within her," writes a New York Times critic.
Her ability to personally connect with the music has won her audience approval and international recognition. "It would seem," observes a Los Angeles Times critic, "all the world loves Dawn Upshaw."
Upshaw made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1984. The soprano has since performed in numerous operas on famous stages across the globe. Her talents have made her a favored partner to many of today's top musicians, and she has starred in several productions created specifically for her.
Upshaw, who has made more than 50 recordings, has two Grammy Awards to her credit.
Vaughn Shirk Interior Design sponsors the performance, and the media partner is WPSU-FM. Artistic Viewpoints, an informal discussion about the performance sponsored by the Center for the Performing Arts Community Advisory Council, is offered in Schwab Auditorium one hour before the performance.
