A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

National a cappella competition to be held Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State's Blue in the FACE a cappella group will host the Varsity Vocals International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Mid-Atlantic quarterfinals at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will feature the following groups and universities:

-- Acapella Stella (California University of Pennsylvania)

-- Blue in the FACE (Penn State University)

-- Counterpoint (Carnegie Mellon University)

-- Overtones (University of Pittsburgh)

-- Shades of Blue (Penn State University)

-- The Chessmen (Franklin & Marshall College)

-- The JoePas (Penn State University)

-- The Originals (Carnegie Mellon University)

-- The Pennharmonics (Penn State University)

-- Vulcanize California (University of Pennsylvania)

Groups will be judged on a variety of items including musicality, choreography and arrangement, among other factors. This event is a once-a-year chance to showcase a cappella and music talent from around the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

The Varsity Vocals International Championship of A Cappella is the only international tournament that showcases the art of student a cappella singing. The program is dedicated to providing top-notch collegiate a cappella groups with valuable feedback from highly qualified judges. Vocalists also have the opportunity to showcase their talent to an international audience and develop relationships with each other, cultivating the art of a cappella singing and a lifelong love of music.
