Jeff Kerr, general counsel for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will visit Penn State Law on March 14. He will share the latest on the legal and policy issues surrounding the growing area of animal rights. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium of Lewis Katz Building in University Park and will be simulcast to 116 in Lewis Katz Hall in Carlisle. The public is welcome, and the event will be webcast live.

Kerr also is vice president of corporate affairs for the PETA Foundation. He has worked with PETA for 13 years to promote animal welfare, animal rights and the ethical treatment of animals. The organization has more than 3 million members and supporters worldwide.

"We are very excited to bring Mr. Kerr to the Law School. Animal law is an up-and-coming area in the legal field and this event presents a unique opportunity to learn more about animal rights and welfare, as well as exploring what the job of defending animals entails," said Alisha Falberg of the class of 2013 and president of the Law School's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF), the organization sponsoring the event.

As the PETA Foundation's vice president of Corporate Affairs, Kerr is involved in all corporate matters, including contracts and PETA's cruelty investigations. As general counsel, he is involved in litigation oversight, involving each of the PETA affiliates around the world. Kerr has participated in several high-profile legal battles, including one before the U.S. Supreme Court to protect PETA’s ability to expose and end animal abuse and suffering, and one in which the jury ruled in PETA’s favor after a lawsuit claiming malicious use of process was filed by a veterinarian who was caught on tape punching and choking cats and dogs. Kerr has also represented PETA before Congress in both written and oral testimony.

The Vegetarian Club will provide refreshments prior to the event in the commons area outside the auditorium at University Park.
