New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

'Conversations' to offer meet-and-greet with President Erickson

Rodney Erickson, executive vice president and provost, reminded those assembled that about 700 students attending Penn State are from the nations affected by the tragedy. "We are all saddened by the terrible loss of life and livelihood in the (region surrounding the) Indian Ocean," he said.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Members of the Penn State community will have the chance to learn more about Rodney Erickson, the 17th president of the University, and what he plans to achieve during his time in office.

On the next program of “Conversations from Penn State,” President Erickson will discuss his life before the presidency and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the University. The show will air on WPSU-FM on at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 and later that same day at 8:30 p.m. on WPSU-TV.

Erickson was appointed president of Penn State on Nov. 9, 2011. He served as provost starting in 1999 after working as dean of The Graduate School at Penn State in 1995. He joined the University in 1977 as an assistant professor of geography and business administration.

“Conversations from Penn State” is a series hosted by veteran interviewer Patty Satalia. The program offers thoughtful, in-depth exchanges with a broad range of remarkable people. In many cases, their trailblazing work has advanced their field and drawn national and worldwide attention.

WPSU serves central Pennsylvania with programming, educational services and community outreach.
