New look planned for academic advising journal, The Mentor

Friday, August 5, 2011

In September, editors in Penn State's Division of Undergraduate Studies will unveil a new look for The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal. The new Web design and structure will accommodate the online journal’s rapid growth within the academic advising community in the last decade and will help to make readers’ visits to the site more educational, productive and comfortable.

Filling a unique niche, The Mentor publishes manuscripts from contributors on a continuous cycle and its authors reflect a range of experience in the field of academic advising, including widely published professionals, faculty members with novel approaches to academic advising, advisers in the trenches on college campuses, and graduate students studying and practicing advising concepts.

The September launch also will showcase “Academic Advising at the University of Utopia,” an article by Marc Lowenstein, associate provost for personnel, programs and policy at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. In the article, Lowenstein invites readers to consider a learning-centered philosophy affirming academic advising as a teaching discipline within higher education.

The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal first launched in early 1999 with the purpose of advancing the practice of advising by quickly disseminating new ideas about the profession and providing a forum for discussion about advising issues. For more information about The Mentor, contact Eric White, executive director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies, at erw2@psu.edu, or Deborah Oakes, communications coordinator of the division, at dlo5@psu.edu.

Editors of The Mentor invite readers to visit often, submit articles, respond to forum opinion questions, and stay in touch with academic advising news and colleagues.
