Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Penn State Abington students receive honors and leadership awards

Approximately 175 students, faculty, staff and proud parents attended the annual Honors and Leadership Awards Ceremony on April 20 at Penn State Abington. The select group of student recipients -- dressed in their business best -- enjoyed an evening of much earned recognition.

Chancellor Karen Wiley Sandler welcomed the guests and presided over the ceremony. Awards were given for academic excellence and exemplary leadership.

“By acknowledging students who succeed academically -- as well as who demonstrate success in areas such as public service and campus diversity -- we are recognizing the various contributions of our students which make us so Penn State proud,” said Sandler.

Academic excellence awards were given to students in all years and most areas of study with outstanding grade point averages. They also were given to students who successfully completed the requirements of the Penn State Abington Honors Program, the top cadets in the Abington Army ROTC program and an outstanding athlete.

Nine students received Leadership Recognition Awards which includes the coveted Eric A. and Josephine Walker Award. Soon-to-be-graduate Shaun Doyle was the recipient of the Walker Award, which recognizes students at locations other than University Park “whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship, leadership and citizenship have been directed into programs and services that have positively influenced fellow students and have contributed to the prestige and well-being of their campus, and hence, to the reputation of the University as a whole.”

Special recognition goes to sophomore Christopher Guarracino who received not one, not two, but three awards. The three awards included the Sparks Award for achieving a 4.0 cumulative grade point average by the end of his third semester; a certificate and pin for successful completion of the Penn State honors program; and the Sanford F. Nicol Award for Engineering, a monetary award for an outstanding engineering student.
