A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State pep rallies to fire up football faithful at away games

Nittany Lion fans traveling to Tuscaloosa for the Penn State-Alabama game Sept. 11 can get pumped up and ready for the prime-time game at the Penn State Pep Rally, beginning at 3 p.m. local time.

The pep rally, organized by the Penn State Alumni Association, will feature the Penn State Pep Band, the Nittany Lion, cheerleaders and some rallying words from President Graham Spanier and Alumni Association Executive Director Roger Williams. The event takes place in a tent on the University of Alabama campus at the corner of 4th Street and 5th Avenue, just north of the University Medical Center. The pep rally tent opens at 3 p.m., and the program begins at 4 p.m. (local times).

Four other Penn State Pep Rallies also will be in tents close to the away football stadiums. The pep rallies, tent opening times and locations are:

-- Oct. 2, 4 p.m. Central Time, Iowa. Location: Hawkeye Village, inside the original Grant Field, adjacent to the Iowa football team’s Kenyon Practice Facility; Iowa City, Iowa;

-- Oct. 23, Time TBA, Minnesota. Location: Gateway Plaza, directly south of the McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. SE, Minneapolis;

-- Nov. 13, Time TBA, Ohio State. Location: Southeast corner outside of Fawcett Conference Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd.; Columbus, Ohio;

-- Nov. 20, Time TBA, Indiana. Location: Bud Light Pavilion, between Gates F and G of FedEx Field; Landover, Md.

All pep rally tents open three hours prior to kickoff, and the pep rally program begins two hours before kickoff. Pep rallies are free and open to all Penn State alumni and Nittany Lion fans.
