Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Junker named trustee emeritus

Friday, July 9, 2010

DuBois, Pa. -- Edward P. Junker III, former chair of the Board of Trustees, was awarded the rank of trustee emeritus on July 9 in recognition of his meritorious service as a board member for 24 years. Although retired from voting and serving as officers, Penn State's trustee emeriti continue to serve on the board as their schedules permit.

"Ted Junker has contributed to Penn State in so many ways," said Steve Garban, current chairman of the board. "We saw tremendous growth in the University during his time as chair of the board, including the addition of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, and the launch of the Schreyer Honors College, World Campus and College of Information Sciences and Technology. This type of growth is not possible without strong support of the board, and we are grateful to Ted for his leadership during this period."

In addition to serving on the board, Junker, a 1959 Penn State alumnus, was vice chair of the Campaign Steering Committee and a member of the Executive Board for A Grand Destiny: The Penn State Campaign from 1996-2003. He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of The Campaign for Penn State from 1984 to 1990 and served on the National Development Council. He served as chairman of the board of directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from 2000 to 2009 and chaired its development committee. He also is former chairman and a member of the Council of Fellows at Penn State Erie.

"Ted's keen business acumen and his ability to view issues from all sides has kept Penn State on the leading edge and able to take on many challenges," said President Graham Spanier. "For more than two decades, his insights and experience have been a valuable addition to our board and to the University as a whole."

Junker received the Philip Philip Mitchell Alumni Service Award in 1984. In 1987, he was selected as an Alumni Fellow in the College of Health and Human Development and at Penn State Erie and in October 2000 he became one of five members of the first Board of Directors of the Big Ten Network.

Junker was elected to the Board of Trustees as a business and industry trustee in July 1986 and was re-elected for succeeding terms. He was elected vice president of the board in 1996 and 1997, and was elected president of the board from 1998 through 2000.
