Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

WPSU has received a My Source Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in Washington, D.C.

The My Source Education Innovation Awards recognize and showcase how public broadcasting stations use pioneering approaches and emerging digital technologies to serve the educational needs of their communities on-air, online and in the classroom.

“Stations across the country are using technology in creative and innovative ways to deliver educational tools and resources that are making a real difference to teachers, parents and children,” said Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “Public media is the definitive education partner for a new generation of learners and CPB congratulates WPSU for its outstanding contribution to the community.”

WPSU’s Blue Ribbon Readers program is a series of seven online, interactive literacy games that build skills and confidence in kindergarteners through fifth graders. Assessment of pre-and post-test scores revealed that on average, students in classes using these games gained an oral reading fluency of 17 words per minute and increased their reading comprehension scores by 28 points.

The award was presented to Ted Krichels, general manager of Penn State Public Broadcasting, by Pat Harrison at the Council of Chief State School Officers/Public Media Executive Summit. WPSU will receive a $3,000 grant to further support the project.
