With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

The funeral procession for Joe Paterno made its way past Beaver Stadium and down Porter Road as crowds applauded on Jan. 25. Thousands lined the procession route through the University Park campus and downtown State College to bid a last farewell to Joe Paterno.

Coach Joe Paterno was on the field for the first half of the Nittany Lions' football game. Penn State beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 13-3 on Oct. 8, 2011, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Beaver Stadium.

Katie Knobloch and Andrew Adamietz, members of the a capella group Blue in the Face, shared a candle at the vigil held Sunday, Jan. 22, to mourn the death of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who passed away earlier in the day. Several thousand members of the Penn State and State College community came out to the Old Main lawn on Penn State's University Park campus for the vigil.

Six named to receive Distinguished Alumni Awards

University Park, Pa. -- The Penn State Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 22) selected six Penn State alumni to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award, the University's highest award for an individual. Following are the 2010 Distinguished Alumni, year of graduation, and current title:

— Joan Amble earned her bachelor's degree (1975) in accounting from The Smeal College of Business. She is executive vice president and corporate comptroller for American Express Co. and resides in Darien, Conn.

— Gen. C. Robert Kehler, commander, Air Force Space Command, earned his bachelor's degree in music education (1974) from the College of Education. He resides in Colorado Springs, Col.

— Daniel S. Mead of State College, Pa., earned his bachelor’s degree in quantitative business analysis (1975) and his master's degree in business administration (1977) from The Smeal College of Business. He is chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless.

— Karen B. Peetz of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., earned her bachelor's degree in individual and family studies (1977) from the College of Health and Human Development. She is chief executive officer of financial markets and treasury services of The Bank of New York Mellon.

— Richard L. Trumka is president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), with headquarters in Washington, D.C. He earned his bachelor's degree (1971) in accounting from The Smeal College of Business.

— Johannes D. Veldhuis of Rochester, Minn., is professor of medicine, consultant and clinical investigator at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, Mayo Clinic. He graduated valedictorian from the College of Medicine with a doctoral degree in medicine (1974).

Additionally, the following three individuals have been invited to return to the University in June to receive their Distinguished Alumnus Award (named in 2009).

— David L. Heymann, assistant director-general, Health Security and Environment, and representative of the director-general for polio eradication of the World Health Organization, earned his bachelor's degree in science (1966) from the Eberly College of Science. He resides in Sauverny, France.

— Jigme Yoser Thinley is the prime minister of Bhutan. He was the first student from Bhutan to select Penn State to complete degree work, and earned his master's degree in public administration (1976) from the College of the Liberal Arts.

— Xi Yao is the honorary (former) dean of the School of Electronics and Informatics Engineering, professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and director, Electronic Materials Research Laboratory at Xian Jiaotong University, Xian, China. He earned his doctoral degree in solid state science (1982) from Penn State.
