Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

"I don't worry how the electorate characterizes themselves. What really matters is how they feel about the president. Polls are just snapshots and the president has only been in office for 10 months. The one that counts is the midterm poll. I think Obama is in great shape."

-- Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, answering a question about recent polls taken that claim more Americans are becoming conservative.

"The increase of conservatism in the United States is the reaction to Obama's policies. Better than two-to-one, people are against public health care. We have the best health care system in the world."

-- Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff and senior adviser to President George W. Bush, rebutting Dean's remarks. The two politicians spoke and debated on health care on Tuesday evening, Oct. 27, in Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium, to an audience of several hundred students and community members. Rove and Dean were the second speakers in this year's Distinguished Speaker Series. For more information about the series, go to http://www.spa.psu.edu/dss.html.
