Weather deteriorates, causing hazards

Photo by Annemarie Mountz An elm behind Old Main on Penn State's University Park campus split under the weight of heavy, wet snow during an October 2005 snowstorm.

In what an advisory from the National Weather Service has termed "a remarkable ... historic and extremely damaging event," the wintry mix of rain and snow that was falling earlier today (Oct. 15) has turned to all snow over much of the northern half of central Pennsylvania. Because many trees still have their leaves, this early, wet snowfall has potential to cause serious damage, with the ability to bring down tree limbs and power lines.

Falling limbs may present hazards until temperatures rise and the snow melts. Pedestrians are urged to exercise caution and remain alert when moving about campus. Pugh Street Mall, Allen Street Mall, Schreyer Lane, Hastings Road near Graduate Circle and College Avenue near Pugh Street are some of the key areas which could have falling branches if enough snow sticks to the leaves that remain on the trees. Everyone is urged to be very aware of the considerable weight on the tree limbs due to the snow, and to avoid walking or parking under trees until temperatures rise and the snow melts.
