Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Enterprise architecture advisory group convenes at Penn State

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Nearly 70 corporate leaders met recently for two days at Penn State to lay the groundwork for new academic degree programs and an academic research center in the emerging field of enterprise architecture.

Leaders from companies including IBM, Boeing, Gartner and PricewaterhouseCoopers discussed the creation of undergraduate and graduate degrees in enterprise architecture that would be offered in Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST).

Plans are also under way to create an enterprise architecture-focused research center and professional development programs. Enterprise architecture professionals need to have both enterprise business and technology understanding and perspectives, making the program a perfect fit for the College of IST, a program that offers both skill sets with an enterprise perspective.

Brian Cameron, professor of practice and director of the enterprise architecture initiative in the College of IST, led the meeting and said the group took great strides toward making their ideas a reality.

“The first meeting of the Enterprise Architecture Advisory Group was one of the productive discussions I’ve seen in quite a while,” Cameron said. "During the meeting, we laid a great foundation for our continuing discussions in the areas of EA undergraduate and graduate education, professional development and research. We were able to bring together a broad cross-section of organizations, industries, and perspectives. The energy and enthusiasm in the committee sessions was terrific -- now we need to keep the energy going as we continue the discussions virtually."
