Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

The Penn State Arboretum will turn into The Sound Garden from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, as musicians from Penn State and the surrounding community gather there to perform music in a variety of genres. The concert is free and open to the public, and free Creamery ice cream will be served.

Initially scheduled to take place on Oct. 18, the event was postponed due to inclement weather.

Performances include a piano and violin duet by Adam Jacob and Matt Weaver, State College Area High School Brass Choir, local bands The Element, Papa Papaya, and Havoc Jack; singing groups Blue in the FACE and Savoir Faire; banjo player Mark Blashford, and others.

The concert, the first event of its kind to be held at the Arboretum, is the culminating project for six students and Schreyer Scholars in EDTHP 234H, Leadership Jumpstart. The students' goal in holding the concert is to draw Penn State students and State College residents to the Arboretum to discover its beauty and underlying missions.
