With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

The funeral procession for Joe Paterno made its way past Beaver Stadium and down Porter Road as crowds applauded on Jan. 25. Thousands lined the procession route through the University Park campus and downtown State College to bid a last farewell to Joe Paterno.

Coach Joe Paterno was on the field for the first half of the Nittany Lions' football game. Penn State beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 13-3 on Oct. 8, 2011, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Beaver Stadium.

High winds causing safety hazard; Porter, Curtin roads closed

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

University Park, Pa. -- High winds have caused some panels to dislodge from the Beaver Stadium south end scoreboard. For safety reasons, portions of Porter and Curtin roads, which border the stadium, are being closed until the wind advisory is lifted.

Porter Road is closed to all vehicular traffic from Dauer Drive near Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, to Park Avenue. Curtin Road is closed to vehicular traffic from University Drive to Porter Road. Police are urging pedestrians and bicyclists also to avoid the area for safety reasons.

CATA is rerouting buses to avoid the area as well:

-- The Blue Loop will now take Curtin Road to University Drive and resume its route on Hastings Road.
-- The Red Link will now take Curtin Road to University Drive and resume its route on Park Avene.
-- The Green Link will turn right onto Bigler Road, then take Hastings Road to University Drive and make a left back onto Curtin Road, where it will resume its route.
-- The P and H routes will follow the same reroute as the Red Link.

Please note that these detours are temporary and may change frequently, depending on the safety hazard.

Employees and students already parked in the restricted area (North section of Lot 44 or Lot Porter North) are asked to stay clear of the area. Those who must access their vehicles are asked to do so quickly and exit the area immediately.

As part of work on the scoreboard in the south end of Beaver Stadium this week, panels on the roof of the scoreboard and those above the video screen were loosened for removal and replacement. Today's high winds caused some of those panels to dislodge and fly out of the stadium. There has been some damage to at least one car in an adjacent parking lot, and one panel landed in the roadway. Because other panels remain unstable, a safety hazard remains. The panels cannot be secured because the high winds make it too dangerous for workers to be on the scoreboard.
