Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

"Ice Cream U: the Story of the Nation's Most Successful Creamery," an exhibit, will be on display in the main exhibit area of Pattee Library on the first floor. The exhibit, which runs from Sept. 11 to Nov. 7, features images and details from the book of the same name, written by Lee Stout.

In "Ice Cream U," Stout concentrates on one of Penn State's most popular destinations as well as the nation's oldest and most successful creamery. Librarian Emeritus Stout, who spent 27 years as Penn State University archivist, adds his intimate knowledge of Penn State history to a wealth of old and new photos to produce a visually spectacular and interesting book. He tells the story of the Penn State Creamery's modest beginning, the growth of State College and the campus, to its current status as an internationally respected center for education, research and delicious ice cream.

The book was made possible through the generosity of Eleanor Judy Smith (Penn State class of 1959) and the late Ronald W. Smith (Penn State class of 1958). Mrs. Smith is the granddaughter of Creamery Superintendent Frank Knoll, who played a significant role in the development of the Creamery from 1904 to 1944.

The book is available for purchase through The Berkey Creamery, The Penn State Bookstore on Campus and other University outlets, and on the Web at http://www.psupress.org online. Watch for local book signings by Stout this fall.

The exhibit is open during Pattee Library normal hours of service, available at 814-865-3063. For more information, contact the Libraries' Office of Public Relations and Marketing at 814-863-4240.
