University Park joins five other campuses in opening CLEP test centers

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

University Park, Pa. -- This fall, Penn State University Park will join five other Penn State campuses in opening a College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) test center. CLEP centers are authorized by the College Board and enable adult learners to earn college credits for knowledge they have acquired through independent study, on-the-job training and life experiences. Three to 12 credits can be earned for each exam and can be applied toward Penn State degree programs.

The test center, located in the Outreach Building in Innovation Park, will offer exams at 8:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Sept. 4.

Currently, Penn State's New Kensington, Greater Allegheny, DuBois and York campuses, as well as the Pennsylvania College of Technology, offer more than 30 exams in five subject areas: business, composition and literature, foreign languages, history and social sciences, and science and mathematics.

CLEP exams are open to anyone, not just Penn State students. Exams last about 90 minutes and are mainly multiple-choice, with some fill-in and some listening sections for foreign languages. Scores are provided to test-takers at the completion of most exams. A score of 50 is needed to attain college credits.

Since 1967, more than 6 million exams have been administered by 1,500 colleges operating CLEP test centers. At Penn State, 110 people took exams during the2007-08.
