Nursing program receives grants to aid student retention

Friday, August 7, 2009

Pennsylvania College of Technology has received grants totaling more than $81,000 to award scholarships to students enrolled in its nursing majors.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation awarded two grants to the nursing program: a Nursing Education Grant for $72,851 and a Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students Grant for $8,547.

From those funds, the program will award grants to eligible students whose other financial aid does not cover all schooling costs. This is the seventh year that the college has received the money.

"We are most appreciative of these grant funds that will provide essential financial support for many fine nursing students who may not otherwise be able to continue toward their goal of becoming excellent health-care professionals," said Sharon G. Auker, director of nursing.

Nursing Education Grants offered by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation help alleviate the state's nursing shortage and prevent further decline in the workforce. Health-care organizations, health systems and other health-care related organizations across Pennsylvania support the creation and proliferation of the Nursing Education Grants program and have worked with the foundation to ensure their effectiveness.
