With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Katie Knobloch and Andrew Adamietz, members of the a capella group Blue in the Face, shared a candle at the vigil held Sunday, Jan. 22, to mourn the death of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who passed away earlier in the day. Several thousand members of the Penn State and State College community came out to the Old Main lawn on Penn State's University Park campus for the vigil.

Aviation Awareness Day set for Saturday

University Park, Pa. -- The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) State College Chapter 1327 will hold an Aviation Awareness Day this Saturday, Aug. 8, at the University Park Airport General Aviation Terminal located at 2535 Fox Hill Road, State College. Admission is free and the event is open to the public from 8 a.m. until noon.

More than 20 airplanes will be on display, including single- and twin-engine airplanes, antiques, classics, homebuilts, biplanes, gliders, ultra lights, corporate aircraft, helicopters, models and more. This event will offer a great opportunity to learn about general aviation airplanes and the principles of flight.

In addition, EAA Chapter 1327 State College will provide free introductory airplane rides (weather permitting) for youth 8 to 17 years of age through the EAA Young Eagles program. Seats are limited and rides are on a first-come, first-served basis.

A pancake and sausage breakfast also will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. at a cost of $7.50 per adult and $3.75 per child age 11 and under.
