"Training Rules," a new film that examines homophobia in college sports and how it affects student athletes, will be screened at 10 a.m. June 11 in Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library. The one-hour video will be followed by a panel discussion. Assistant Athletic Director Jan Bortner and Associate Professor Sue Rankin, a former Penn State softball coach, will be among the guests on the panel.
"Training Rules" takes an in-depth look at the story of former Lady Lions Jen Harris who, in 2006, took legal action against Penn State in a suit alleging discrimination based on perceived sexual orientation, racism and gender stereotyping. The documentary premiered at the Philadelphia Film Festival earlier this year and is being screened at venues in many parts of the country.
This event is organized by the LGBTA Student Resource Center and the University Libraries Diversity Committee, and is free and open to the public. The organizers hope to highlight an issue that few on campus discuss openly, and to create an awareness of how discrimination based on sexual orientation affects student athletes, and the campus community at large.
