With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IE) in Penn State's College of Engineering commemorated its 100th birthday this year with a centennial celebration, Friday and Saturday (April 3 and 4) at the Leonhard Building and Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.

The IE centennial celebration honored the accomplishments of the department, its faculty, staff and students over the last 100 years. The celebration also focused on the future goals of the department and its mission to produce world-class, globally aware industrial engineers.

More than 300 alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends participated in the weekend’s activities.

The celebration began Friday at the Leonhard Building with a welcome picnic. On Saturday, activities included Leonhard Building and campus tours, lunch with the Nittany Lion and Blue Band trumpets, lab activities, a panel discussion, trivia challenge, children’s activities and a Saturday evening reception at the Nittany Lion Inn. A centennial book that illustrates the remarkable history of the department also was exhibited, with copies available for those in attendance.

Founded in 1909, the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering is the oldest industrial engineering department in the nation and currently ranks as a top five program in the country. With a roster of 24 student-oriented faculty members, Penn State IE focuses on quality, hands-on education and concentrates on addressing today’s most pressing issues through innovative research in our state-of-the-art facilities.
