A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Cieslak named 2009 World-Class Alumni Award winner

Christen Cieslak, a 1991 civil engineering alumna, has been named the winner of the College’s 2009 World-Class Alumni Award.

Cieslak is a principal with Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Chronicle Consulting, an engineering and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) firm.

She deployed with the U.S. Army Reserves during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2004. She was the chief of engineering plans and services for the Directorate of Public Works in a camp in Kuwait where she oversaw fast track projects, including the construction of a fitness center and sports complex, roads, medical clinics and office space. Cieslak also served at the Army's Facility Engineer Group in Pittsburgh.

Cieslak's projects include the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts for Pittsburgh Public Schools, PNC Bank Park in Pittsburgh, North Shore Riverfront Park in Pittsburgh and Baltimore/Washington International Airport.

Established in 2005, Chronicle Consulting provides personal construction management and an à la carte program management services such as estimating, scheduling, change order management, claims analysis, LEED service, construction coordination and owner's representative services.
