University Park, Pa. -- There were two new variants of phishing spam reported Monday, March 30. One is a fairly familiar phishing variant pretending to be Web-based e-mail server maintenance, appears to be from the phony address "PS-Notes" and is requesting a user's action in order to prevent irregular service. The other is a fake announcement for a free bi-weekly e-mail newsletter supposedly with content of interest to the Penn State community, from the fake address "Penn State E-News Letter Admin."
Both have links in the message body, taking one to a Web page which exactly mimics Penn State's WebAccess login page. This is NOT the real WebAccess page, and any user who enters their userID and password will compromise their Penn State access account.
Penn State users are asked to be vigilant against any further variation on the fake WebAccess phishing, and to delete any such e-mail they may receive. The University currently is taking all necessary actions to resolve this issue.
