New York Times foreign editor next Forum speaker

Monday, October 27, 2003

University Park, Pa. – Roger Cohen, foreign editor of The New York Times, will deliver the Penn State Forum lecture at noon on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Nittany Lion Inn. The topic of his presentation is “America’s World: The Complications of Power.”

Cohen assumed his current role in March 2002, after serving for more than a year as the acting foreign editor. Previously, he had served as bureau chief of The New York Times’ Berlin bureau and as its Balkan bureau chief from 1994 to 1995 and reported from Bosnia throughout the war there.

Cohen had been a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal since 1983, when he opened its Europe office in Rome as chief correspondent covering Italy and the East Mediterranean, reporting from Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Lebanon. From 1979 to 1983, Cohen was a foreign correspondent for Reuters.

Born in London, England, he received an M.A. degree in history and French from Oxford University in 1977. He is co-author of a biography of General Norman Schwarzkopf, “In the Eye of the Storm,” and “Hearts Grown Brutal: Sagas of Sarajevo.”

Twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Cohen has won several awards, including two from the Overseas Press Club.

The Penn State Forum is a lunchtime speaker series offered by the Faculty Staff Club and is sponsored in part by the Penn State Bookstore. It is open to the public. Tickets are $10 for members and $12 for non-members and include lunch. Reservations can be made by mail or by stopping by the Faculty Staff Club office at 103 HUB-Robeson Center.
