Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Extension educator Martin honored with International Achievement Award

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Andrew Martin, farm management extension educator in the College of Agricultural Sciences, is the staff recipient of the 2009 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award.

The award, established in 1995, recognizes faculty and staff members who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the international missions of the University. It is named for the late deputy vice president for international programs.

Martin is honored for his leadership role in the College’s internationalization efforts. With other county educators and faculty members, he represented the University in Serbia in 2003 and again in 2005 to teach farm management under a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As a result of the training, the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture included farm management as a line item in its budget.

In Moldova, he helped create a new curriculum to teach Moldovan farmers the information needed to determine their gross margins with a strong emphasis on recordkeeping, and in Mozambique, Africa, on a Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs assignment, he helped the Ministry of Agriculture address challenges in the countryside following independence.

In the fall of 2002, Martin was invited by Winrock International to serve in the Republic of Kazakhstan. While there, he helped promote the products and services of a Pennsylvania company. He returned to Kazakhstan in 2007 as the keynote speaker at a national farm expo.

As the volunteer treasurer for Central Pennsylvania World Hunger for six years, he has helped raise more than $420,000 to help feed the poor. The group’s Canning Project has provided 155,000 meals to those in need at home and internationally.
