University Park, Pa. -- The Eberly College of Science summer camps are back for 2009. Science-U, formerly known as the Action Potential Science Experience (APSE), is back after a year of rebuilding in 2008. The Eberly College of Science Outreach Office hosts up to eight different hands-on science camps each summer for children entering grades two to 12. The weeklong day and residential not-for-profit camps run Monday through Friday from mid-June to the end of July. Camp curriculum is developed and taught by University faculty who are assisted by researchers, local area teachers, and both graduate and undergraduate students. The camps were created in 1999 as an outreach and service learning initiative to interest, challenge, and excite diverse populations of children and expose them to different areas of science.
For the summer of 2009, eight diverse camps are planned, including "Natural Born Killers: Food-Borne Illness and the Microbial Menace" (partnering with the College of Agricultural Sciences' Food Science Department), "Gee Wizards Science," "Penn State's CSI" (Crime Scene Investigators), "Myth Busters" and "Catch the Wave: Adventures in Sound and Light." Each camp has a unique theme and is offered for a specific age/grade level. For more information visit http://www.sciencecamps.psu.edu online.
