Two engineering graduate students win dissertation awards

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Two graduate students from the College of Engineering are among the 10 recipients of the 2009 Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Award.

Josephine Lau, a Ph.D. candidate in architectural engineering, and Jinjie Shi, a Ph.D. candidate in engineering science and mechanics, will each receive a one-time grant of $5,000. They will be honored on March 28 at the Nittany Lion Inn during the Graduate School Alumni Society's spring social and recognition dinner.

Each year, the selection committee accepts nominations from five categories: engineering, life and health sciences, physical and computational sciences, social sciences and fine arts and humanities. Nominations are limited to three per academic college.

The award, which is one of the most prestigious honors for Penn State graduate students, is available to full-time doctoral students who have received approval of the dissertation topic and have passed their exams, or to M.F.A. students in their last year of study.
