University Park, Pa. — A convoy of Saturn hybrid vehicles participating in next week's Inauguration Day ceremonies will make a stop at Penn State on Thursday, Jan. 15, before heading to Washington, D.C.
The vehicles, requested by the Barack Obama Inauguration Committee, will be on display from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot between Reber Building and the Hintz Family Alumni Center. The event is free and open to the public.
"The intention is to display (the vehicles) as the types of eco-friendly transportation that President-elect Obama endorses," said Craig Colwell, director of operations and general sales manager for Saturn of State College, which is supporting the local event.
On hand will be the 2009 Saturn Vue two-mode hybrid and 2009 Saturn Outlook two-mode hybrid. According to General Motors, the new hybrids will deliver approximately 50 percent better fuel economy than the equivalent nonhybrid models.
In addition to the inauguration-bound Saturns, Penn State's Advanced Vehicle Team will have their competition vehicle, a converted Chevrolet Equinox, on display.
Visitors will have the opportunity to drive or ride in the Saturns and Penn State competition vehicle. People also will have the chance to sign a giant card wishing President-elect Obama well as he assumes the presidency. The card will be printed on paper infused with wildflower seeds that will be planted after it is shared with the new president.
The event also will give visitors fuel-saving tips that they can implement on their own vehicles.
Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak said, "While buying a vehicle with better fuel economy is one big change people can make, we also want to encourage small, everyday steps."
The event is sponsored by the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute and the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team.
The hybrid convoy also is making stops at Ohio State University and Howard University en route to the inauguration.
Penn State's Advanced Vehicle Team took several first-place honors in last year's Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainability Mobility, a national competition that challenged 17 universities to convert a standard Chevrolet Equinox sports utility vehicle into a hybrid. This year, the team will take part in the next incarnation of the contest, called EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge.
