Russian ballet company performs Cinderella Jan. 15 at Penn State

Monday, January 5, 2009

University Park, Pa. — The State Ballet Theatre of Russia makes its Penn State debut in a full-length production of Cinderella at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus. Choreographed by Vladimir Vasiliev, a former star of the Bolshoi Ballet, Cinderella is set to jubilant music by Sergei Prokofiev.

Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $37 for an adult, $20 for a University Park student and $24 for a person 18 and younger. Tickets are available online at http://www.cpa.psu.edu or by phone at (814) 863-0255. Outside the local calling area, dial (800) ARTS-TIX. Tickets are also available at three State College locations: Eisenhower Auditorium, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Penn State Tickets Downtown, weekdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Bryce Jordan Center, weekdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A grant from the University Park Allocation Committee makes Penn State student prices possible.

Cinderella animates the yarn about a girl forced to serve her wicked stepmother and stepsisters until a fairy rewards her kindness by giving her a chance to attend a ball, meet a prince and live happily ever after.

The company, known in Russia as the Voronezh State Theatre of Opera and Ballet, was established in 1961. It has toured with productions of Russian story ballet classics throughout Europe, Africa, and North America. Among the company's more than 50 dancers are many distinguished Russian artists and winners of international ballet competitions.

Foxdale Village, a Quaker-Directed Continuing Care Retirement Community, underwrites family presentations at the Center for the Performing Arts. WJAC-TV and 95.3 3WZ are the media sponsors for Cinderella. Audio description, which is especially helpful to patrons with sight loss, is available for this performance at no extra charge to ticket-holders. Artistic Viewpoints, an informal discussion featuring a visiting artist or company member, is offered in Eisenhower Auditorium one hour before the performance and is free for ticket-holders. Artistic Viewpoints regularly fills to capacity. Seating is available on a first-arrival basis.
