University Park, Pa. -- University Health Services (UHS) has been awarded a second three-year term of accreditation for ultrasound services following a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Robert Heinbach, UHS gynecologist, uses ultrasound to diagnose the origins of pelvic pain and irregular bleeding in female patients. “I’ve been using this technology in my practice since 1978”, Heinbach explains. “Through ultrasound, I can determine if the cause is related to the uterus (ie. fibroids or polyps which may cause irregular bleeding and ovarian cysts) that may result in pelvic pain.” Ultrasound is also used if there if bleeding or pain in early pregnancy.
Heinbach consults with clinicians on all four of University Health Services' clinical teams. Each team consists of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and medical assistants chosen for both their specialized and general expertise. Additional information about UHS clinicians, including Heinbach, is available at http://www.sa.psu.edu/uhs/basics/staff.cfm online.
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They asses the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with program focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
