World Campus named to list of top military friendly universities

Monday, December 15, 2008

University Park, Pa. -- Military Advanced Education, an authority on education for military personnel, announced recently that the Penn State World Campus was selected as one of the publication’s "2008 Top Military Friendly Colleges and Universities" honorees.

The designation appears in the December 2008 issue.

According to Glenn Berlin, associate publisher for KMI Media Group, the publishing firm that produces Military Advanced Education, universities are selected from hundreds of applications reviewed by an independent panel of judges. The judges select honorees that have established programs that specifically benefit military students, such as tuition reduction plans and distance education opportunities.

Penn State Outreach Vice President Craig Weidemann said that the recognition reveals the level of commitment that the World Campus has for military students whether they are active duty, National Guard, Reserve or veterans.

“We appreciate the many sacrifices our military students make as they serve our country,” Weidemann said. “And we pledge our best service to them, so that wherever they are in the world, they can be connected to Penn State through the World Campus.”

Ken Udas, executive director of the World Campus, said the World Campus has worked hard to achieve this honor.

“Penn State has a long history of serving the distance education needs of our military,” Udas said. “However in recent years we have been very proactive in aligning our policies, procedures and student support services to address the unique needs of our military students.”

Military Advanced Education is the leading journal on trends in higher education, innovative programs, distance learning and schools of special interest to the military,
