Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Graduate School launches new application for admission

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Prospective students applying for graduate study at Penn State can now complete a new and improved online Graduate School Application for Admission. Features of the new application, which went live on Oct. 1, include the ability to respond to questions specific to the program of study to which the student is applying; the capability to upload documents required by the program, such as a resume and a writing sample; a portal for the student’s references to provide recommendations; and secured processing of credit card payments of the application fee via PSU Pay. It also offers the graduate degree program, through the Graduate Admissions Decision System (GRADS), a digital portfolio of the application materials for review, the capability to upload documents, and the ability to add or change questions specific to the program.

The Graduate School Application for Admission is available 24 hours a day via the Graduate School Admissions and Program Information Portal at http://gradsch.psu.edu/portal/. The online application is intended for first-time applicants for degree admission and for first-time applicants for nondegree admission, which includes individuals interested in taking graduate-level courses and post-baccalaureate certificate programs.

The redesign of the online Graduate School Application for Admission began more than a year and a half ago and involved the work of one of Penn State’s continuous quality improvement teams, with input and feedback from graduate programs. Members of the Graduate School Online Admissions Application Redesign Team are: Regina Vasilatos-Younken, sponsor; Chris Brown, co-chair; Cindy Nicosia, co-chair; Heather Duty, Marilyn Engle, Judy Evock, Jodi Johnson, and Dmitry Podkuiko. In addition to the new features, the redesign required a review of all information requested in the application for clarity and accuracy, and updates to the system architecture to support security mandates.
