Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Education information session for employees is set for Sept. 25

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Penn State Continuing and Distance Education, Student Affairs, and Undergraduate Admissions are hosting an information session for Penn State employees at the University Park campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium to provide information about using their Employee Tuition Reduction benefit to take Penn State courses. This benefit provides eligible faculty, staff and retirees with opportunities to take courses at reduced fees. Employees may bring their lunches to the event.

As a complement to traditional daytime courses, Continuing Education offers evening courses during the week and Saturday courses, and World Campus courses are available online. These courses are flexible, allowing employees to create a schedule that fits around work, family and other responsibilities. Some degrees, such as the bachelor's degree in organizational leadership and the associate degree in information sciences and technology, are especially designed for adult learners. Both of these degrees can be taken in a "blended" format involving online and classroom instruction. Continuing Education programs are designed for adult learners and offer smaller class sizes and increased instructor-student interaction.

Dana Aina, academic adviser for Continuing Education, hopes staff will make use of their education benefits."Those attending the information session can learn how to get started, the benefits of taking courses and about the different degree programs that we offer," Aina said.

Employees are encouraged to register for the information session by calling Adult Learner Advocacy and Enrollment Services at (814) 865-5403 or sending an e-mail to psu4you@outreach.psu.edu.
