With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Katie Knobloch and Andrew Adamietz, members of the a capella group Blue in the Face, shared a candle at the vigil held Sunday, Jan. 22, to mourn the death of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who passed away earlier in the day. Several thousand members of the Penn State and State College community came out to the Old Main lawn on Penn State's University Park campus for the vigil.

Vote smart in '08 … a local discussion explores the issues and candidates of the 5th Congressional District

WPSU will hold a public conversation on the issues facing residents in the 5th Congressional District. The public is welcome join the studio audience of this broadcast event, titled "Race for the 5th," at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the lobby of the Outreach Building in Penn State's Innovation Park.

Patty Satalia will lead a discussion with a panel of experts on this highly competitive race. Audience members will have an opportunity to take WPSU's 5th District Candidate Quiz to determine which candidate aligns with their views.

The discussion will feature Michael Berkman, Matthew J. Brouillette and Stephen Herzenberg. Berkman is a professor of political science and director of undergraduate studies at Penn State’s University Park campus. He is the author of "Ten Thousand Democracies: Politics and Public Opinion in American School Districts" (with Eric Plutzer), "The State Roots of National Politics: Congress and the Tax Agenda, 1978-1986" and numerous articles on congressional and state elections and state public policy. Brouillette is president and chief executive officer of the Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives (http://www.CommonwealthFoundation.org), an independent, nonprofit public policy research and educational organization located in Harrisburg. Herzenberg is the executive director of the Keystone Research Center (KRC), a nonpartisan economics think tank in Harrisburg.

"Race for the 5th" will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 17, on WPSU-TV. It also will be streamed live at http://www.wpsu.org/vote08 online.

This broadcast event is part WPSU's of comprehensive coverage of the elections in Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District. In addition to this public discussion, WPSU has created an online candidate quiz to help voters determine how their views align with the record number of contenders in this year’s open race for the 5th District race. It is an interactive way for 5th district residents to become informed this campaign season. The website also contains video and audio interviews with each primary candidate, a blog written by experts in Pennsylvania politics, and information about issues that are critical to the district. To reach the Outreach Building in University Park, take Park Ave. going toward Beaver Stadium, drive past Mount Nittany Medical Center to the Innovation Park Exit A. Take that exit and then a right-turn at the stop sign. The Outreach Building is on the right-hand side of Innovation Blvd.
