Busy working science educators seeking a master’s degree have the opportunity to study online at Penn State
University Park, Pa. — At a time when science education for young people in the United States is being recognized as a critical priority for the future of the nation, Penn State hopes a new online master's degree program will help to put the right information and tools at the disposal of the teachers who can make a difference. A global leader in geography, meteorology, and the earth sciences, Penn State has recently launched an online Master of Education in Earth Sciences degree. Beginning in summer 2008, secondary science teachers from around the globe will be able to learn from renowned Penn State faculty through the University’s World Campus.
The 30-credit program is designed for working teachers who wish to advance their career and help students in grades 7 through 12 master educational objectives related to Earth and space science. Courses from multiple disciplines within Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the Eberly College of Science are featured, including geosciences, energy and mineral engineering, meteorology, geography and astronomy. In addition, the program includes courses in curriculum and instruction offered by Penn State’s College of Education.
“All the courses developed for this program will be taught by graduate faculty research scientists,” said lead faculty member Eliza Richardson, fellow of the Dutton e-Education Institute of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. “We think our courses will be fun and worthwhile and intellectually stimulating for teachers who otherwise may not get many opportunities to think about science the way researchers at universities do.”
