In light of the Nov. 20 Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision Penn State plans to cooperate with the State Employees' Retirement System (SERS) as it responds to the court's ruling. Penn State has decided not to appeal the ruling further.
The Harrisburg Patriot-News asked SERS in 2002 to release the salary information for selected Penn State employees who participate in that retirement system.
The public focus of the lawsuit has been primarily on Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, although none of his salary is funded by state dollars.
About 36 percent of Penn State's full-time employees, or 6,252 people, participate in SERS.
Penn State has always believed the salaries of its employees should be confidential and had argued before the court to keep that information private. The 4-2 decision on Nov. 20 favors the Harrisburg Patriot-News' request to have access to state employee retirement system information for Penn State employees.
Less than 10 percent of Penn State's budget comes from state appropriation.
