Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

University Park, Pa. -- Linda Kline, staff assistant in the department of agricultural economics and rural sociology at Penn State's University Park campus, is the recipient of the 2006 Support Staff Award.

The honor recognizes the overall high quality performance of a non-exempt member of the support staff and dedication to customer service, quality improvement, teamwork and professionalism.

Kline, who joined the department in 1973, was cited by numerous members of the College of Agricultural Sciences faculty and staff as being a key part of the department's work during her time on staff.

As Penn State began training child-care providers in the early 1980s, Kline was instrumental in designing the first Cooperative Extension distance education program in the nation that provided training for home-based child care providers. As the program expanded, she helped coordinate and manage the Penn State Better Kid Care Program.

While assisting multiple faculty members on a variety of tasks, Kline served as managing editor of the Journal of the Community Development Society as well as maintaining critical involvement with the International Rural Sociological Association and the International Society for Society and Natural Resources.

"Linda stands out as an innovator and problems solver," said one nominator. "She is extraordinarily proactive in seeking out additional tasks. At times, Linda understood what I needed her to do before I had managed to figure it out myself. This was invaluable to my development, and I believe that she had this effect on others as well."
