With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Penn State-Ohio State clash is second-largest audience to watch college football on the network

University Park, Pa. -- Penn State's thrilling 17-10 victory over Ohio State last Saturday delivered the second-highest audience for a regular-season college football game on ESPN and has given the Nittany Lions' the Big Ten's top four highest-rated games on the all-sports network. The Beaver Stadium slugfest, witnessed by an electric throng of 109,839, was watched by approximately 4.435 million U.S. television households. Only the Florida State-Miami (Fla.) contest in 1994 drew a larger audience (4.846 million) for a regular-season college football game on ESPN.

The Nittany Lions' eighth consecutive win achieved a 4.91 rating, representing ESPN's highest-rated regular season college football game since the 1997 game between Florida State and Georgia Tech (5.1). The last 30 minutes of Saturday night's clash earned a 6.12 rating, as the Nittany Lions held the Buckeyes scoreless in the second half to improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

The Lions' win over the Buckeyes earned the Big Ten's second-highest rating on ESPN, giving Penn State the top four spots and five of the top eight highest rated Big Ten games on ESPN. The conference's top rated contest was Penn State's 1994 season finale with Michigan State, which posted a 5.4 rating, as the Nittany Lions completed an 11-0 regular season and earn their first Big Ten championship.

Coach Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions have long been one of college football's premier programs for television networks. Penn State will be appearing on television for the 133rd time in its last 135 games on Saturday when the No. 8 Lions visit Michigan for a 3:30 p.m. start, which will be regionally televised by ABC. Penn State will make its second prime time appearance of the season on Oct. 22, visiting Illinois for a 6:00 p.m. CT start that will air nationally on ESPN or ESPN2.

In addition to Saturday's pulsating game, ESPN's College GameDay, which originated from Penn State last weekend, averaged 1.86 million homes and a 2.1 rating, making it the most-viewed Saturday morning edition of the program. The show was the second-highest rated program behind a 2.2 rating for the program at the 1993 Florida State vs. Notre Dame game.
