With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Penn State University Press receives Getty Foundation grant

Thursday, September 15, 2005

University Park, Pa. -- The Getty Foundation, the philanthropic division of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, has awarded Penn State Press a $162,000 grant to subsidize publication of a new series of books, "Refiguring Modernism: Arts, Literatures and Sciences."

The Getty Foundation grant will help defray costs in the development, editing, design, manufacturing, and distribution of books in "Refiguring Modernism." Artists from Cezanne to Seurat and Redon are considered in the series, which focuses upon the impact of technology and politics on the arts.

"Penn State is delighted and gratified to receive the generous grant from the Getty Foundation to support publication of 13 important volumes by the Penn State Press. This gift is of great value as it promotes the unique contributions of scholarly publication," said Eva Pell, vice president for Research and dean of The Graduate School.

Initiated by Gloria Kury, art and humanities Editor at Penn State Press, the "Refiguring Modernism" series features books by leading scholars from the United States, England and France. The series design is dynamic, bringing text and images into dialogue with one another. Each of the books contains numerous illustrations, printed in color or as duotones.

Press Director Sanford Thatcher added, "This generous grant from the Getty Foundation will go a long way toward enabling the Press to remain at the forefront of pioneering publishing in the fine arts, building on the long tradition of excellence in this field for which the Press is well known."
