College admissions view books, videos and other student-recruitment materials rarely portray their campuses in snow, which is too bad, at least as far as Penn State's University Park campus is concerned. Witness this mid-winter scene of Old Main -- the original Old Main -- under a fresh mantle of white sometime during the 1920s. The building then was much modified from the way it was in 1859, when it opened its doors to the University's first class of students. By the time this photo was taken, Old Main no longer served as a residence hall and was used primarily for administrative offices. It nonetheless remained a handsome structure, especially when cloaked in wintry elegance. See this beautiful portrait of the "old" Old Main at http://www.sesquicentennial.psu.edu/pix/weeklypic.html
