Penn State Tree Crew member Drew Beben works to dislodge snow from leaves to reduce the chance of branches cracking and breaking under the weight caused by the heavy snow clinging to the leaves. One branch already broke off this tree, between Henderson Building and the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Beben and co-worker Gareth Peoples removed the fallen branch from the road, cut it into manageable pieces and piled it below the tree until it can be hauled away.

The crown of another tree outside Henderson Building on Penn State's University Park campus is laden with snow. Falling limbs may present hazards until temperatures rise and the snow melts. Employees and students are urged to use extreme caution and remain alert to areas that may either be closed off to pedestrian or vehicular traffic, or could pose a potentially unsafe condition.

Students walking between Old Main and Pattee Mall, many of them wearing galoshes and breaking out heavy coats for the first time this season, marveled at broken branches strewn on and around sidewalks. The University community has been reminded to be on the lookout for falling limbs that are breaking from the weight of wet snow on leaves that have not yet fallen from the trees.
