Penn State Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin serves as co-director of a two-week-long "boot camp" for college students selected as interns through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Editing Intern Program. The session continues until June 12 on the University Park campus, preparing the students who will serve as copy editors this summer for their work at newspapers across the country.

The 11 "boot camp" participants, including three from Penn State, come from seven different schools. Overall, 75 students were selected for the highly competitive national program, which conducts similar "boot camp" sessions at other college campuses across the nation. Of the 75 students selected for summer internships, six were from Penn State.

Gazette; and Emily Sher, a senior from Livingston, N.J., The New York Times News Service.

Former Philadelphia Inquirer managing editor and Penn State faculty member Gene Forman, who spent 41 years as a newspaper journalist and served three times as a Pulitzer Prize juror, addresses ethics and fairness with students. He was the Larry and Ellen Foster Professor at Penn State from 1999 until his retirement from full-time teaching in December 2006. He taught courses in news editing, news media ethics and newspaper management. In 2003, Foreman received two awards for excellence in teaching in the College of Communications Ñ the Deans' Award and the Alumni Society Award.

Along with Foreman, the faculty for the "boot camp" includes co-director John Dillon, a senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism, and five other faculty members from the College of Communications.
