Seventh grade girls from more than 26 schools participated in Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers on Friday, May 8 at Penn State York. Here, students learn the chemistry behind cosmetics and create their own nail polish color.

Students enjoyed time at the Penn State York Bookstore during their visit to campus. The Pathways program, in its 13th year, is designed for seventh grade girls to encourage them to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.

Pathways participants tested their structural aptitude by building freestanding tower out of marshmallow and spaghetti during the Tasty Towers workshop. This was a record-breaking year for the program with 231 students, 30 teachers, and 15 parents participating. Participants attend workshops covering a wide range of topics from meteorology to the science of color in cosmetics, and the future of hand held computing.

Manel Wijesinha, associate professor of mathematics at Penn State York, works with students doing an inclined plane experiment during the Be a Modern Day Galileo workshop. The program also provides teachers with information to guide young women toward career opportunities in STEM fields.
