Throughout the year, University Police officers and staff are busy keeping Penn State students, faculty and staff safe through their regular shifts of patrols, personal safety programs and public awareness campaigns, among other tasks. During the Nittany Lions' football season, however, they become the central part of a much larger network of police officers from across Pennsylvania that works beyond the regular call of duty. University Police directs hundreds of officers who come to protect more than 100,000 college football fans as they converge on Happy Valley for home games at Beaver Stadium. Three industry-led teams including Penn State and four other research universities have received contracts to provide a range of research and engineering services to the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The collective value of the three contracts is expected to exceed $465 million over a five-year period. NETL, part of the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratory system, conducts research in coal, natural gas and oil technologies. Penn State faculty and graduate students will collaborate on carbon capture and sequestration, unconventional fossil fuel sources, highly efficient energy conversion technologies, environmental and economic impacts and similar areas that figure prominently in the nation's quest for cleaner sources of energy and energy security. Thor Wasbotten has been named assistant dean for student media and online operations in the College of Communications, effective Jan. 1. Wasbotten joined the Penn State faculty in 2004, bringing more than a decade of award-winning professional experience to his role as senior lecturer and general manager of television operations. The Office of Human Resources at Penn State has announced that the last flexible benefit reimbursements in 2009 will be generated on Dec. 15. The reimbursement process will resume on Jan. 4, 2010. Properly documented reimbursement requests received in the Employee Benefits Office no later than the close of business on Dec. 4, will be included in the final 2009 disbursement. Please note that original documentation is required and faxes will not be accepted. (more)
To optimize the performance of Penn State's Course Management System, ANGEL, during fall finals week, the import wizard and export wizard tools will be turned off from 4 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 until 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. David Hall, professor of information sciences and technology and director of Penn State's Center for Network-Centric Cognition and Information Fusion (NC2IF), will assume interim leadership of the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) on Jan. 1. Hall joined the College of IST in 2001 and previously served as associate dean for research and graduate programs. In that capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the college's doctoral and master's degree programs, as well as research grant administration and leadership of faculty research efforts. (more)
University Health Services (UHS) has received 4,000 doses of injectable H1N1 flu vaccine that will be distributed to Penn State students from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.
Thursday's clinic will be held in 205 Student Health Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Appointments will be available beginning Wednesday, Nov. 25, and must be scheduled online through the UHS Web site at http://www.sa.psu.edu/uhs/basics/online_access.cfm online. Friday's clinic will be held in 129 HUB-Robeson Center. No appointment is necessary for Friday's clinic.
UHS strongly encourages all students to get vaccinated and students involved in THON in particular should make a point of receiving a vaccination. (more)
