Still Life

With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

Skip Smith, son of the late H.O. Smith, rings the Old Main bell as Penn State President Graham B. Spanier looks on. Smith is looking at the clapper, which he inherited from his father. The elder Smith, a Penn State alumnus, former faculty member and successful businessman, came into possession of the clapper while clearing out a boarding house his construction company was renovating. Bell experts have determined this clapper is the original clapper for the bell -- the one that disappeared many, many years back, the victim of a prank. Thanks to Skip Smith, the bell and its original clapper are now reunited.
